His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa has issued a powerful message to the British government, calling for the repatriation of the remains of Zimbabwe’s fallen heroes, currently held in British museums. Highlighting the significance of leaders like Chief Chiwashira, Chief Chingaira, Chief Mapondera, and Chief Mashayamombe, President Mnangagwa emphasized the painful legacy these artifacts represent.
“The remains of our brave warriors… are still held in British museums as trophies, after they were captured and killed in horrific circumstances,” stated President Mnangagwa. He reminded Britain that the spirits of these national heroes would not be at peace until they are returned to Zimbabwe and afforded a proper, dignified burial.
President Mnangagwa urged the British government to act in the spirit of respect and historical reconciliation by returning the remains of Zimbabwe’s ancestors, acknowledging the importance of laying them to rest on their homeland. The appeal is part of Zimbabwe’s broader efforts to reclaim and honor the legacy of its freedom fighters, whose sacrifices remain a source of national pride and remembrance.
