    Harare, Zimbabwe – April 14, 2025

In a gesture that reflects the strength and longevity of diplomatic ties between Zimbabwe and Angola, His Excellency Agostinho Tavares, the outgoing Ambassador of the Republic of Angola to Zimbabwe, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency, Cde. Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, at State House this morning.

The meeting marked a significant moment of mutual respect, deep-rooted friendship, and the reaffirmation of shared values between the two Southern African nations. It also served as a symbolic closure to Ambassador Tavares’ mission in Zimbabwe—a tenure defined by active engagement, diplomatic collaboration, and a mutual desire to elevate bilateral relations to new heights.

    A Brotherhood Forged in History

Zimbabwe and Angola share more than just diplomatic ties—they are nations bonded by a shared liberation history. Both countries fought for freedom from colonial rule and supported each other during their respective struggles for independence. That history of solidarity laid the foundation for the strong diplomatic relations that exist today, and leaders from both countries have continuously worked to honor and uphold this legacy.

During the meeting at State House, President Mnangagwa praised Ambassador Tavares for his dedication and the role he played in strengthening the bond between Harare and Luanda. He acknowledged the Ambassador’s commitment to enhancing cooperation across various sectors including trade, energy, agriculture, and regional peacekeeping initiatives.

“Ambassador Tavares has been a reliable friend to Zimbabwe,” President Mnangagwa stated. “His efforts have contributed significantly to the continued unity and growth of our bilateral ties. As he concludes his mission, we wish him every success in his next chapter.”

    Advancing Bilateral Cooperation

Throughout his diplomatic tenure, Ambassador Tavares was instrumental in pushing forward various bilateral initiatives. He actively facilitated discussions aimed at increasing investment and trade between the two countries, particularly in sectors such as mining, oil and gas, and agriculture—areas where both Zimbabwe and Angola hold vast untapped potential.

Under his leadership, cultural and educational exchanges also flourished, promoting deeper people-to-people ties and greater mutual understanding. These efforts further helped cement the already-strong foundation of cooperation and goodwill between the two nations.

The outgoing Ambassador expressed his gratitude for the warmth and support extended to him by the Government and people of Zimbabwe. He also conveyed Angola’s commitment to maintaining the momentum of bilateral relations and enhancing regional collaboration through multilateral platforms like the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU).

    Looking Toward the Future

As Ambassador Tavares prepares to depart Zimbabwe, his farewell visit was not just a diplomatic formality—it was a reflection of the enduring partnership between two nations that continue to walk side by side in the journey toward development, peace, and regional integration.

Both Zimbabwe and Angola reaffirmed their commitment to advancing mutual goals and deepening cooperation in the face of modern global challenges such as climate change, food security, and youth empowerment.

This morning’s engagement at State House served as a poignant reminder that while ambassadors may change, the bonds between nations—when rooted in solidarity, shared struggle, and mutual aspiration—remain unshakable.

The Government of Zimbabwe extends its heartfelt appreciation to Ambassador Tavares for his exemplary service and wishes him success in his future endeavors. The people of Zimbabwe will remember him as a diplomat who not only represented his nation with honor but also became a part of Zimbabwe’s diplomatic family.
